Mighty Oaks From Little Acorns Grow

Great things may come from small beginnings.

You see here a photograph of me holding a small piece of paper.

The little piece of paper is not much by itself but it means a lot to me. It’s a check from Capper’s Farmer for $10.00. You might say Big Whoop and in some ways I can agree with you. However the little piece of paper holds a mighty share of significance to me. It’s my first “paycheck” solely attributable to writing. I didn’t even ask for it. All I did was submit a short essay to Capper’s Farmer and voila! The next thing I know I’m getting an envelope in the mail. They’re telling me while they didn’t have room for it in the print version that they loved it and decided to publish it online in their Humor/Nostalgia section. Furthermore they’re giving me ten dollars for the privilege.
What a thrill! The published piece was an essay about the recovery of my great-grandfather’s kraut cutter and what it meant to our family. Capper’s called it “The Vegetable Slicer” so if you ever want to read it online go to Cappers Farmer, find their humor/nostalgia section and search for The Vegetable Slicer.
